Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)

CBT-I is a form of psychotherapy that can help people who can’t sleep. It can be highly effective in improving the quality of both a person’s sleep pattern and daytime functioning. In fact, CBT-I is recommended as the first treatment one should try, since it’s safe and works over long periods of time.

Individuals having trouble falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, or difficulty sleeping on a schedule that allows them to function best in their work may be the candidates for treatment.

In addition, CBT-I may be an appropriate treatment for people experiencing sleep disturbances due to anxiety, depression, chronic pain, or night terrors.

It is important to point out that CBT-I is a treatment for Insomnia Disorder; it’s not appropriate modality for sleep apnea, movement related sleep disorders, parasomnias, and some other sleep related disorders.
